Your role as Academic Lecturer

Q: Do I get IT equipment?

Yes, you will receive a work laptop and other equipment (2nd screen, headset, mouse and keyboard) if you need it.

Q: Can I take leave at any time or do I have to include it in the lecture break?

You can take 30 days' holiday at any time and only have to coordinate within your team.

Q: Do I have to travel to several IU locations?

According to the employment contract, only one primary location is defined. All other locations are possible in principle, but will be discussed with you. Any travel costs to other locations (not the primary location) will of course be covered.

Q: How much of the activity is remote and how much is “on campus”?

Since teaching scheduling depends on many factors, it is not possible to give a clear answer. But you can be sure that we will try to make it as suitable as possible for you.

Q: Which public holidays apply to me?

The public holidays of the federal state of your primary location apply.

Q: Am I a permanent academic employee at IU or a freelancer?

If you hold a professorship or are an academic lecturer, you are employed on a permanent basis. If you are a lecturer, author or tutor, on the other hand, you are a freelancer.

Q: Can I become a professor after a certain time?

The possibility exists. However, there are certain formalities that you must fulfill according to the Thuringian Higher Education Act. You can apply for an advertised professorship, but ultimately the decision about your appointment is not solely in the hands of the IU. A mixed independent appointment committee is assembled to make the selection. Beyond professorships, IU offers a wide variety of other jobs, including non-teaching positions.

Q: How can I imagine the time model?

You can choose whether you want to work full time or part time and the model is changeable if you want to switch from one model to another.

Q: What are the next steps in the application process?

Your application will be carefully reviewed by the department. Since IU receives a large number of applications for different locations and departments, the review may take some time. In order to make the waiting time easier for you, we have compiled all relevant information on this page. We thank you very much for your patience!

Here at IU International University of Applied Sciences (IU) you start as part of the academic teaching team at Germany’s largest private university – in a hybrid model of face-to-face seminars and online teaching at one of the IU locations and the location-independent and flexible online studies. In addition to varied teaching activities, you can expect to work in media production, supervise theses and correct exams.
