Distance learning

Distance-only learning allows our students to study when and where they want, 100% flexible. Versatile digital learning tools, AI-supported teaching assistance and virtual live formats make studying maximally appealing and modern.

Dual studies

In the “dual study” format, our students regularly alternate between theoretical courses at the IU and practical phases in the company with our numerous practical partnerships.

MyStudium

The myStudium model combines the best of both worlds. Our students have a choice here; per quarter, they decide whether to study on campus or virtually.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Do I get IT equipment?
Yes, you will receive a work laptop and other equipment (2nd screen, headset, mouse and keyboard) if you need it.
Can I take leave at any time or do I have to include it in the lecture break?
You can take 30 days’ holiday at any time and only have to coordinate within your team.
Do I have to travel to several IU locations?
According to the employment contract, only one primary location is defined. All other locations are possible in principle, but will be discussed with you. Any travel costs to other locations (not the primary location) will of course be covered.
How much of the activity is remote and how much is “on campus”?
Since teaching scheduling depends on many factors, it is not possible to give a clear answer. But you can be sure that we will try to make it as suitable as possible for you.
Where does the IU have a location?
We offer you the opportunity to work at many exciting locations throughout Germany. Here you can find all the locations at a glance.
Which public holidays apply to me?
The public holidays of the federal state of your primary location apply.
Am I a permanent academic employee at IU or a freelancer?
If you hold a professorship or are an academic lecturer, you are employed on a permanent basis. If you are a lecturer, author or tutor, on the other hand, you are a freelancer.
Can I become a professor after a certain time?
The possibility exists. However, there are certain formalities that you must fulfill according to the Thuringian Higher Education Act. You can apply for an advertised professorship, but ultimately the decision about your appointment is not solely in the hands of the IU. A mixed independent appointment committee is assembled to make the selection. Beyond professorships, IU offers a wide variety of other jobs, including non-teaching positions.
How can I imagine the time model?
You can choose whether you want to work full time or part time and the model is changeable if you want to switch from one model to another.
What are the next steps in the application process?
Your application will be carefully reviewed by the department. Since IU receives a large number of applications for different locations and departments, the review may take some time.
